How to keep your home safe from Burglars this winter

Security Consultants, Gulfraz and Derek share their tips on how to keep your home safe from Burglars this winter.

It’s a sad fact that burglaries happen more during the winter months, and properties without security measures are five-times more likely to be burgled.

Always check you have locked your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even if you are just nipping to the local shops or spending time in the garden.

It’s a good idea to store keys out of sight and away from letterboxes.

Install external lighting to the front, side and rear of your home.
Make your home looks like someone is living in it by using automatic timer-switches to turn your lights and radios on when it starts to get dark.
Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries while you are away on holiday or business trips.

Ensure any gates and fencing are kept in good condition. Gates should always be locked when not in use.

Consider fitting locks to all windows, sheds, and garages, and fit 5-lever deadlocks to your front and back doors.

Make sure you lock away bikes in secured sheds or garages.

Any ladders and tools should always be stored away securely.

Install an adequate home alarm system and have it maintained and serviced annually.

Look to join your local Neighboured Watch Scheme. You can find your nearest Neighboured Watch Scheme by visiting:

Keep your valuables, such as jewellery and documents out of sight from windows and letterboxes.

It is worth taking advice from your local crime prevention officer on other ways to help reduce the risk of burglary, and if you are thinking about installing an alarm system, or wanting to improve your current home alarm call Tel: 0808 281 0148, or email: or for a free information pack.
